How to avoid viruses and spyware

There is a major problem faced by just about every individual who regularly surfs the web. Many of you have most likely already experienced it. The problem is picking up a virus or spyware. This can cause symptoms like having your web pages redirected to sites you had no intention of going to, your PC slowing down noticeably, or even rendering your PC inoperable. There are certain things you can do to lessen your chances of becoming infected.

One thing to make sure of is that you have a good, up to date, Antivirus program installed. There are many good ones available both free and commercial. This is no guarantee that you won't get infected, but it does lessen your chances. Some good examples are Norton antivirus, and for a free one AVG is a good choice.

Another way to avoid getting a virus is to refrain from clicking on links both in email and on sites like Facebook. Often virus writers will create a link on a page that looks like it is going somewhere benign, but is actually taking you to an infected page. If you want to goto another webpage, open up a new browser tab and type the link in yourself, this will lessen your chances of going somwhere you did not intend on going.
